Gamespy to Bring PS3 and PC Gamers Together for UT3

Submitted by on August 15, 2007 – 5:49 pm2 Comments

ut2007_1.jpgGamespy has entered into a technology agreement with Epic to build the foundation so PC and PS3 users can play Unreal Tournament 3 against one another. Features will include matchmaking, leaderboards, stat tools, community tools and competition applications that will be available to both platforms through Gamespy.

This will be an interesting experiment, because it could become a huge challenge to the Live for Windows campaign that Microsoft is pushing to gamers in the PC world. The other thing is that this technology will be bound to the Unreal Engine 3.0, so in theory, anyone licensing the engine would automatically have access to these modules and would be able to include cross platform PC/PS3 multiplayer right in the toolkit.

Wow, that’s a huge hit to the Windows Live campaign.

Could be, but it’s still NOT confirmed that UT3 will allow cross-platform play:

“Northcutt said that he couldn’t officially comment on whether or not GameSpy’s tech is involved in [UT3], but other UE3-based games Turning Point: Fall of Liberty from Codemasters and Brothers in Arms: Hell’s Highway from Ubisoft will be benefitting from today’s announced agreement.”
