From Wii to 360 in 60 seconds.

I recently found myself once again in the awkward position of having just convinced someone to buy an Xbox 360. This seems to happen to me more and more, especially since I started writing here. Not that I have anything against the Wii, I mean, I love my Wii and I don’t even own a 360, but part of understanding this pastime is knowing that specific hardware is suited to specific purposes. Let me elaborate.
When a friend told me he was selling his Wii for money to put toward a PS3, I was supportive. To each his own, right? He was interested in the new 80GB model, which comes with Motorstorm. He admitted to having no interest in Motorstorm, so I advised him that he’d be better off with the 60GB model for $100 less. Not only is it cheaper, but it has hardware PS2 support, a big selling point for a guy who owns a PS2. No sooner had I convinced him that he needed the 60GB model than he mentioned why he wanted a PS3: to play the new Madden. Oh.
I pointed out that at a lower price point, with a far more robust online service, and a superior version of Madden ’08, the Xbox 360 was a better value for him. As an Xbox owner, he’s already familiar with the expense of Xbox Live, so that’s not a concern for him. What is a concern is playing the newest version of Madden every year, playing it online with all the bells and whistles, and having it look as good as it can on his giant TV.
Now, that isn’t to say nobody should own a PS3. There are a lot of promising titles headed for the PS3, and in the meantime, provided you’ve got the right model, you can play games from a large library of PS2 games. And there’s no mistaking that you can see the PS2′s library of games from orbit, right between the Luxor in Las Vegas and the Great Wall of China. With the PS3 still stomping all over the 360 in Japan (and by the way, it will continue to do so) you will see most premium software titles from Japan appearing on that platform.
And of course, I have no trouble coming up with reasons to own a Wii, even if it really oughtn’t be your only platform if you have the resources for it to be otherwise. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I got a new game today, and I have to go play it.
