EA Tiburon Jabs at PS3

So EA Tiburon took off the kids gloves today and called out the PS3. They didn’t just complain about programming for the PS3, but they out and out said, “The truth is the PS3′s tools and the way it works just sucks.” Now I have critiziced the PS3 in the past for being overpriced, but this seemed to be a bit harsh. If you have issues with the way the system works, then you take those complaints to Sony. And that wasn’t the end of it. That first quote was bad, but the developer felt the need to kick it up to Chernobyl type levels:

The truth is they are both virtually the same in terms of hardware when it comes to how powerful they are, maybe the PS3 has a few different things that makes it a bit more advance, and Sony has this idea that it is designed for optimal development but that’s a load of crap. In the last generation we would make the game for PS2 and then port it over to Xbox, but because Xbox was easier to develop for, we could actually enhance the title a little if we wanted to. The case with this generation is different, now we make the game for 360 first and then port it over to PS3, but we really don’t have the time to mess with how the PS3 works to really add to much more. It will change in the future, but for now it sucks.”

Talk about treating someone like a red-headed stepchild. I can’t wait to see the EA damage control on this one. And I am sure that this will send George into another EA fueled rage.

    George won’t mind cuz it’s dissing the PS3. ;-)

Anyway, this is chalked up to sales numbers. They can afford to poop on the PS3 since they apparently can’t even get their games to run right on the thing despite their billions *cough*Madden*cough* and because the PS3′s installed base is small.

So wait, he’s complaining because they spent ALL of their time developing for the 360 and then had to rush the PS3 version out the door? and that’s somehow Sony’s fault?

Hmm.. as a software (and hardware) developer myself, I’m going to call him on that one and say: “Suck it up. Your management sucks. They over-committed their development cycle and didn’t take into account working on new hardware.”

Heck, when the PS2 came out the same thing was said in the first year, and that was before the Xbox even existed. New hardware is hard to program on, period. If its “easy”, then everyone would be doing it. What bugs me the most about a lot of these developers is they keep bitching about how hard it is to debug the next-gen system/software.

The problem is many of these people (for whatever reason) didn’t ever take into account multi-threading development. As such, yes things are more difficult that a single execution path. But if you hadn’t been in the dark for the last 10 years, you would have seen this coming. Even Valve put their collective foot in their mouth when Gabe Newell said that multi-core/thread was not the way of the future, then turned around 6 months later with a in-house developed development kit.

Working on “bleeding edge” hardware, whether it’s the PS2, the Xbox, the Xbox360 or the PS3 is always frustrating during the early development cycles. Sometimes this frustration can stay around for quite a long time because no one ever spends any time on working on the development environment and just on developing more software.

Maybe EA is only saying publicly what most other developers are experiencing.

You boys seem to think it’s the tail wagging the dog.

Sony made a system that isn’t developer friendly and now Microsoft has caught up so developers can focus on the XBOX360 over the PS3 and not worry about the economic impact.

3rd Party games will be the huge factor in which system sells more and Sony screwed up.

It’s the same reason nobody will be playing Grand Theft Auto IV until sometime next year.

    Thanks again Sony.

    Keep up the good work.

    More sales for us!
