COD4 Beta Impressions
When I got my invite into the COD4 beta last night I ended up springing out of my chair and slicing open my thigh on my desk…yeah it hurt! After hopping around the room screaming ouch ouch ouch ouch, I typed in the agonizingly long code and to my delight less then 10 minutes later I was playing COD4, and all the pain was gone.
COD4 feels and plays like every game before it, which might sound boring, but trust me it’s a good thing. Where COD4 distinguishes itself is its deep class system. You can choose from a variety of perks which give your character specialized abilities such as extra health or the ability to sprint for a longer periods. It’s a lot of fun trying out new combinations of perks in order to create the perfect killing machine. The beta only gives you a small sample of perks but the ones you do get are all very effective. Another cool element of the game is how it rewards you for doing well. Get 3 kills in a row and you are granted a UAV, which brings up all your enemies on the radar which is very nice for laying down C4 traps. If you make it to 5 kills you get to call in an air strike, make it to 7 and a helicopter swings down out of the sky and kills anyone it can. Getting these support services are crucial if you want to win as they build up the body count quite quickly.
The three maps included in beta are all very well done with tons of detail, but don’t expect to be blown away by the graphics. It’s a beta so I won’t pass judgment on the graphics yet, but we can’t really expect the multiplayer to look as good as the campaign and keep a steady framerate at the same time. That said COD4 is a very good looking game and should only get better before launch.
Overall I am very impressed with the beta. The Call of Duty games have always been a favorite of mine but the multiplayer has never kept me interested as they lacked depth. This time however they are putting tons of depth into the game and it’s paying off big time.
