California Appeal of Gaming Bill Is Under Scrutiny
Recently, a law in California that was to ban the sale of violent video games to minors was struck down by the State Supreme Court. In the ruling, the law was deemed to infringe on the free speech rights of the developers.
The State, including Governor Schwarzenegger, was unsatisfied with the ruling, and decided to appeal. That decision is causing a lot of uprising from the ESA and other media outlets. The ESA is using their Videogame Voters Network to get gamers to call their politicians to let them know how they feel about the State fighting the ruling.
The Los Angeles Times had the following to say about the Governor’s decision to fight the ruling:
“Having made a career off fantasy violence, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is an odd advocate for the regulation of violent video games. After all, his face (and, sometimes, his voice) helps to sell a number of electronic kill-fests. Yet there he was last week, pledging to appeal a federal judge’s decision against a state law banning the sale of such games to minors.”
It will be interesting to see how the pressure from gamers across the state, influences the decision to continue the fight over this ruling.
