Brawl “mystery mode” is Subspace Emissary subgame.

Super Smash Bros Melee on the Gamecube had an “Adventure” mode in it which was enjoyable, if simplistic. You selected one of the unlocked characters and then ran quickly through side-scrolling stages that were designed around various Nintendo games: there was one that looked like something out of Super Mario Bros., you ran a lap on an F-Zero track while trying not to be killed by the supersonic wave of oncoming cars (which was pretty challenging), you even climbed around tunnels underground looking for the Triforce. It was a lot like a ride in a theme park that was all Nintendo.
Today’s Dojo update tells us that the “Adventure” mode in Melee has evolved into a complete side-scrolling action game called The Subspace Emissary, which will be included on the game disc, complete with stages and cutscenes. The earlier revealed “mystery” game mode, it turns out, is this: you can watch a video clip that the screens in that other post were captured from in this new post. Subspace Emissary is implied to be its own game, which they seem to think they could sell on its own, but they assure us they will not.
Personally, I’m not surprised that the “Adventure” mode returns for Brawl, but I am surprised that they’re going so all-out with it. And of course, I’m pleased, and what Smash fan wouldn’t be?
