BioShock Widescreen Isn’t

bioshock_hand.pngJoystiq has gotten a reply from 2KGames about what’s up with widescreen mode in BioShock. Apparently they did the old cheap DVD trick of lopping off the top and bottom portions of the image to make a 4:3 image become widescreen, resulting in widescreen players actually getting less to see than the non-widescreen players.

Aside from some rumblings from disgruntled players that this might violate widescreen requirements from Microsoft — who I’m sure won’t rock the submarine given the title’s AAA ratings and status — this resulted in pleas to 2KBoston that they had some ‘splainin to do.

The publisher has responded and said that, well, they meant to do that. The response is carefully worded, but they do admit they’re examining whether or not they can change it to what gamers expect. Which would be actual widescreen. In case they didn’t catch that from the options menu. I’m just saying.

Heh, luckily for me I played it in Full Screen mode via VGA adapter, so naturally I didn’t notice a problem.

Hmm, I’ll bet they can charge for this. Maybe make customers pay for the top and bottom of the screen.

Games made for 4:3 have been adding a little on the sides for 16:9 for years. Even if it was designed for 16:9, and is being shown properly there, it looks chopped off. Several other people have commented on it feeling ‘zoomed in’.

It doesn’t ruin what is an otherwise amazing game but minor flaws, especially that seem like common sense, stand out.

The inclusion of SecurRom is much worse than slightly funky aspect ratio stuff.

Wouldn’t matter to me, my box is only 4×3.

You should print a correction to this as the Joystiq article states that they set the widescreen view and THEN ADJUSTED the 4:3 view by ADDING the top and bottom.

In essence, yes, the 16×9 view is “lopped off”, but it is the original and 4:3 is based off of it.

    From another blog:
Elizabeth of the 2K team posted an official message on their site explaining their side.

Elizabeth made it clear that they “didn
