BioShock Widescreen Isn’t
Joystiq has gotten a reply from 2KGames about what’s up with widescreen mode in BioShock. Apparently they did the old cheap DVD trick of lopping off the top and bottom portions of the image to make a 4:3 image become widescreen, resulting in widescreen players actually getting less to see than the non-widescreen players.
Aside from some rumblings from disgruntled players that this might violate widescreen requirements from Microsoft — who I’m sure won’t rock the submarine given the title’s AAA ratings and status — this resulted in pleas to 2KBoston that they had some ‘splainin to do.
The publisher has responded and said that, well, they meant to do that. The response is carefully worded, but they do admit they’re examining whether or not they can change it to what gamers expect. Which would be actual widescreen. In case they didn’t catch that from the options menu. I’m just saying.
