Balanced On The Edge Of A Heavenly Sword

Heavenly Sword

IGN UK’s review of Heavenly Sword is in, and while it cites amazing production values and presentation in its 9.0 scores in those categories, a very short game that limits the signature swordfighting in some of its levels and features poor pacing brings it down to earth with a 7.0 final rating.

I spent some time thumbing through the reviews of Lair and Warhawk in the October 2007 PSM, and the picture these three reviews paint of the PS3′s three strongest exclusives this fall, while visually pretty, isn’t top-rated in the gameplay department. Granted, as more reviews come in it could go either way — the same issue gives The Bigs a 6.5 when other sites have given it much higher marks (IGN 8.0, 1Up 8.5, Gamespy 4/5) — but these games may not be the 9.0+ superb home runs that PS3 fans have counted on to carry them through the holiday season and into 2008.

PlayStation 3 proponents and Sony have pinned their hopes on these three games to pull Sony out of the sales doldrums this Fall. Will more reviews come in with a different take, possibly lifting its fortunes? What will happen to Sony’s strategy if these exclusives are universally panned? Time will tell.

Man! Lair, Warhawk and Now Heavenly Sword are underwhelming critics. Not exactly what Sony was hoping for going into the holiday season.

Now they have to hope Ratchet & Clank and Drakes Fortune are amazing because that is all the have left.

While I agree with them about Lair and Heavenly Sword, they’re wrong on Warhawk. Great game.

though I forget where I read it, so i’ll get flamed for it, I know I have read good reviews on heavenly sword, and I really liked the demo. I preordered this game and can’t wait to play it, and I know a lot of people that are getting it, so it will sell. Same with warhawk, the beta was awesome, both titles will sell just fine.

Maybe the PS3 really isn’t Next Gen after all. Sure, it’s got those great super-duper graphics and all but what does it really matter when the actual game play is a dud. It’s kinda like having sex with Paris Hilton. Sure she looks good but I know a $50 hooker on the mean streets of Seattle that can give ya more bang for the bucks!

Bill Gates chime in every time there is an article about the PS3?

Honestly, I’m not surprised by the shortness of the games at this stage. First round games for a console , and let’s face it: the PS3 is still in its first round of games, are always pretty but short, or bad gameplay: World Destruction League (PS2), Time Killers (PS2), etc. I have many first round PS2 games that were meh in terms of quantity or quality of gameplay. They were pretty, fast, good sound, etc. but lacking in the gameplay department.

Heck, the same thing used to happen with id with each new engine release.

Hey, my fake HTML tags were eaten from my previous post… Here’s what the first line was supposed to say (with the ‘s changed to ::’s):

James, RNC:FTOD does look delicious, and Uncharted also looks really cool.

I’m still sold on Warhawk and I hope we can talk about it in our podcast.
