Analyst predicts PS3 outsold Xbox 360 (Wii still rules, of course)

According to GamesIndustry.biz, Michael Pachter (who you should all have heard of by now) has released a preview of July’s hardware sales and states that he believes the PS3 to have outsold the Xbox 360 by about 45,000 units. He attributes the “bump” to the PS3 price cut.
First of all, STOP CALLING IT A PRICE CUT. Discontinuing your $500 model, dropping the $600 to $500, and then releasing a new $600 (while also purportedly stopping production of the new $500 model) IS NOT A PRICE CUT.
Secondly, whatever the reasons, if this is true, it can only mean good things for gamers at large. More competition is good. Perhaps Microsoft will start dropping prices on their rip-off of an accessory line. It also means more games will have more platforms to compete on. Bioshock on PS3? Yes, please. MGS4 on Xbox 360? Sign me up.
It’s going to be better for the market as a whole if we have three strongly competing offerings instead of one or two. Consumers can expect higher quality games and equipment, and as we buy more, the producers end up making more money, which will only grow the market that much more.
So, Kudos to Sony. Thanks for putting up a fight. We, the consumers, thank you.
