CNet is reporting that a few reviewers of F.E.A.R. on select machines have experienced a very odd problem that has gotten the attention of hardware vendors. Using a USB mouse and/or keyboard on the game can incur a massive performance hit, throwing framerates down the stairs. How far down? Try a a top-end PC gaming rig that runs it at 150 frames per second running it at 17 frames per second. Using a PS/2 mouse and keyboard gets rid of the problem.

It’s not just the mouse and keyboard vendors that are paying attention to this problem, either. NVidia is also chiming in and trying to help ferret out what the causes could be. All of the vendors expect at least some of them to release updated device drivers soon to squash the bug.

So if you had a terrible experience with F.E.A.R. — and not just the nightmares caused by the spooky ghost girl walking around on the ceiling and scaring you — your USB mouse of all things might have been at fault.

or you can play it on an XBOX360 and have no problems. but that’s just me. i like to buy $500 consoles that actually run the software instead of $2000 PC’s and blow an additional wad of cash on every little video card, RAM etc that comes out every few months.
