Stor3d: E3 2007 Trailer Explosion!

Wednesday was a big day for the PlayStation Store with the posting of lots and lots of video trailers. It’s a great convenience to just get them this way instead of waiting for them to be posted online and then fight the crowds to watch them on a small computer monitor. Here’s a rundown of just about everything they’ve posted to date.
Blacksite: Area 51
Aliens invading the earth? Haven’t I seen that somewhere else on the PS3? The graphics look just OK, so I’m thinking very good mission design and levels would be the thing to save this game.
Blast Factor: Advanced Research
Take everything good about Blast Factor, amplify it, stuff it into irregularly shaped cells for fighting, mix in some interesting new bosses, and blend. This one looks very good.
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
This one looks phenomenal, and the trailer opens by saying all of the great fighting you see is actual gameplay. I’m not really sure I believe them — some sequences don’t look all that interactive — but the special effects really stand out in this game, including a neat distortion effect around automatic weapons fire that reminds me of heat shimmers. N’Gai Croal mentioned this game when talking about Killzone 2, and I agree this one is one to watch.
Everyday Shooter
A unique shooter that composes music as you play? Reminds me of Rez but it seems much more relaxing with acoustic guitars and so on. I can see lots of add-on level potential for this one and despite the simplistic graphical style I want to give it a try.
Folklore
Graphically impressive and very colorful, the Folklore video reinforces the good things I’ve been hearing about the Japanese demo from CheapyD and others online.
Go! Sports Ski
This one looks like a simple game of realistically-themed skiing, not cartoony like SSX. This one doesn’t really have me curious about the final game.
High Velocity Bowling
On the other hand, High Velocity Bowling looks and sounds great. The crash of the pins and a variety of on-screen avatars makes me think this could be a big casual game for the system.
Killzone 2
This one looks and sounds fabulous. It lacks the convoluted and engaging plot of Metal Gear, but the Guerrila crew delivered on fabulous visuals and sound in this trailer.
LAIR
For a game coming out next month, this one looked pretty choppy to me. There could be some innovation in here with the dragon-to-dragon fighting as well as rider-to-rider fighting while in flight, but I’m concerned about what I saw here.
LittleBigPlanet “Create”
The fast-motion montage of the developers using the creation tools of the game to demonstrate simple and not-so-simple constructions blew everyone away at E3, and floored me when I saw it in my own home.
Metal Gear Solid 4
This ridiculously exciting video dumps a giant pile of plot information in our laps and ends with a very long and brutal must-see fight between Raiden and Vamp. If you thought Raiden versus the Metal Gears was good last time, check this one out.
Pain
Looks like Wallace and Gromit meets Jackass. I’ll give it a try and if it makes me laugh out loud in terribly evil ways I’ll end up buying it.
Pursuit Force 2: Extreme Justice
I liked the concept of the original Pursuit Force but never got to finish it. This trailer for the sequel on the PSP looks pretty good, but I’ll be renting this one before I consider buying it when it comes out.
Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune
Looks really nice, and I’m excited for Naughty Dog to succeed on the PS3 with this one. Might be just a rental for me though, as it seems like something of an interactive movie: do some firefights, do some Tomb-Raider-esque platforming, repeat.
Unreal Tournament III
UT3 looks jaw-droppingly good. Will it be fun on a console, even if I plug in a mouse and keyboard? I won’t be playing it on my PC that’s for sure.
Warhawk
This trailer highlights the offline gameplay modes, including split-screen and LAN play, as well as highlights the character and warhawk customization options in terms of clothing styles and paint colors. I’m already buying this when it comes out, but I’m even happier that should someone be stuck offline or heaven forbid should Sony’s servers be taken down in the future, gamers will still be able to play the game with friends offline.
And that’s it from Blacksite to Warhawk, a very good haul for PlayStation 3 owners to treasure as these games march towards their release dates.
