PS3 price drops, new model added

Submitted by Kat on July 9, 2007 – 3:21 amComments

dollarsign.jpgThe 60GB PS3 will indeed be sold for $499. However, shell out the same $599 as the current price and you can get the 80GB model (starting in August) with a free copy of Motorstorm.

Hmm, I think I’d get the $499 unit and just put in my own hard drive.

This very short news update brought to you via The BBPS.

Well, I wasn't sure if you meant 40Gigs more than the 360, but that wouldn't have made sense either.
  • Bill m
my bad, meant to say 20gigs more between the 2 ps3 models, thanks for the math lesson though. but, my original idea still stands, for the price, the ps3 is now a good buy

i think it's fascinating that everyone uses the cheap 'SKU' buzzword from the Retail world like they are insiders.
  • Kat
Um, it only gets you an extra 20G if you're talking about the now-middle-SKU PS3... 80-60=20.
  • Bill m
    Dave,

I don't think its a missed opportunity at all, and you are looking at it the wrong way. it is an upgrade. the 60gig version is now only $100 more then then the 20gig 360, but for that $100 you get 40gigs more storage, hdmi, built in wifi, a blu-ray player and 5 free blu-ray movies. I think all that is worth the $100 more, even if you have to buy an hdmi cable ( got mine for $20 ) and a headset, (already owned a bluetooth headset so didn't have to buy one). Anyway you look at it, its a great deal and the price is very very very fair, no one can deny that now.

And the new SKU I think is also priced very well, the extra $100 gets you a $60 game, and 40 gigs more of harddrive space, and you still get the 5 free blu-ray movies.

I'm sorry but this is a great deal, and I think its really gonna work for sony.
  • Dave
Remember when sony said there were no 'elite customers' to them? I'm laughing too.

I think they have missed an opportunity with this.
This isn't so much a price drop, as it is a de ggimping. For people like myself, who like to have the best version of whatever it is they buy, there has been no price drop at all, just a small upgrade and a free pack in of a game that we would have bought a ps3 for if we really wanted to play it anyways. And it still doesn't come with a headset or hdcables like the xbox does, meanin you can add another 70+ dollars to the price right there.

Yeah! Just what I've been waiting for. Now, I'm not going to go out and buy it right away (maybe?), because I still need to have my Gaming Room (TM) finished :)
  • Interesting that they'd add a new higher-end SKU, but it is very good that they're packing in a game with it. Turns it into what the old 60GB model used to be, the preferred SKU for new PS3 owners.

Im waiting until 2014 when the PS3 will be $129 and I can get Motorstorm for $3 at the bargain bin.

Besides, I just got the PS2 last weekend and have many years of fun gaming ahead of me!
