Peter Moore Leaves MS to Head Up EA Sports

For the longest time Peter Moore has been a very vocal advocate of the Xbox 360. While it’s not exactly earth-shaking to the degree a defection to a competing manufacturer would be, Moore leaving Microsoft to head up EA Sports is certainly a surprise. The fact that Jack Tretton, President of SCEA took the opportunity to wish Moore all the best and say he looked forward to working with him was also a bit of a surprise. (We expect Sony executives to do nothing but stick their feet in their mouth, after all.)
Why leave the most successful current-gen console manufacturer to date? Why right after a decent showing at E3? The press is already noting how he, as one of the most public voices of Microsoft’s games division, actively denied there was any reliability problem with the Xbox 360′s. Did Microsoft decide he had served his purpose? Would he now be a liability, always having to answer questions about his denials before getting on to a new message for the gaming press? A press release we received from GamerScore News spins it as Moore leaving to spend more time with his family and move back to northern California with them.
I’d guess that Moore was tired of towing the party line and obviously covering up for all that time just about system reliability alone. I can’t help but think that EA got a hotline into the Xbox 360 executive ranks by netting Moore — something that could be very important as the online gameplay in the EA Sports titles continues to be a big selling point for the games.

UPDATE: The SEC shows that Moore will be getting a $1.5M signing bonus alone for joining EA. There goes any hope of EA Games driving game prices down, right? Check it out.
