Ones To Watch: July 2007 PS3 Releases

One big title lands on the PS3 right away this month, with a couple of football games and the latest NASCAR installment coming later. We could also see two new PSN titles this month. With Rainbow Six Vegas and The Darkness doing so well last month on the PS3, and Super Stardust HD being so engaging for me on the PSN, having one major title this month is something of a reprieve for my wallet.
NINJA GAIDEN SIGMA – TECMO – Team Ninja – July 3rd
The hardcore ninja series lands on the PS3 the first week of July and promises to kick several kinds of arse. It’ll pack a number of new features and gameplay sequences not present in the previous, XBox-exclusive iterations of the game, but will retain the signature difficulty of the previous titles, albeit tweaked somewhat. The free demo on the PSN has been out for a while and already looked gorgeous and played so well when it was released, so there’s a very good chance the retail game will follow in its footsteps, leap off an opposite wall, throw down shuriken, and come down slashing to earn praise from critics.
The developers have said they plan to have downloadable content for the game. What could this be? Nothing’s been announced yet, so we’ll have to wait and see what comes down the pike.
Hit up Gamespot for more videos and an interview or stills; read more at IGN or Amazon.
A Collector’s Edition will be available as well featuring a second disc of video interviews with Team Ninja and the game’s producers. Check the two trailers for it here and here.
There is also a Collector’s Edition coming out for the game, but what’s in it that’s not in the regular game? A second disc featuring interviews. GameTrailers has more in this clip.
ALL PRO FOOTBALL 2K8 – 2K Sports – July 16th
I’m not a sports fan by any stretch, so I’m going to let this trailer (for the Xbox 360 version) of the game speak for itself. Sorry sports fans, but you can read more about the game at IGN or check it at Amazon.
NCAA FOOTBALL 08 – EA Sports – July 17th
The 800-lb gorilla in football games launches their NCAA game a day later. I did notice over on 1Up that the game includes rivalry trophies to earn as a new feature this year. Again, check it at 1Up, IGN, or Amazon.
NASCAR 2008 – EA Sports – EA Tiburon – July 23rd
Another year, another NASCAR game. I haven’t played one of these in years, preferring my racers to be more arcade-y than anything else. It does promise 16-player online racing. I wonder how the online features will stack up to the Xbox 360 version? Details can be found at IGN or Amazon.
NUCLEUS – PlayStation Network – Kuju Entertainment
There’s no firm release date for this one, but it was listed in last week’s “Coming Soon” section of the email from Sony’s PlayStation Store. The 1Up Preview of the game from April talks about the ways it differs from other two-stick-shooters, including different level types and goals and a very different graphical style. More variety is good, so I’ll be looking forward to seeing how it turns out.
SNAKEBALL – PlayStation Network
Again no firm date on this downloadable title, which is said to be a 3D and HD version of the classic cell phone game Snake with weaponry and other competitive modes added. I can’t say I’ve ever asked for a game like this, but let’s see if they can pull it off and maybe pop it onto the PSN for this month. Linkage: IGN, Gamespot, and Gamespy.
I’m also seeing mention of the PlayStation Eye camera and corresponding EyeCreate Software coming this month, but I doubt it’s coming our way anytime before this fall’s release of Eye Of Judgement. I don’t see it available at any online retailers yet, so if you want to read the little that’s known about these so far, you can hit up IGN and GameSpy.
