Mcommand.jpgIn case you don’t know what Missile Command is, let me quote from the Press Release from MS concerning Atari’s new XBLA offering.

While staying true to the original arcade classic, the enhanced

I think that explanation of Missile Command exceeds the lines of code in the game itself.

    Everything old sucks, eh?

Missile Command was actually pretty good. The strategy involved was to destroy enemy missiles at just the points where their own explosions continued the reach of your first shot’s cover. Mastering these matchbook effects was the was to win.

The -real- suck here is in their description. Planets “Zardon” and “Krytol?” Those came from the Atari 2600 version’s manual! The arcade had none of that nonsense, it kept its mouth shut and let us assume we were defending the United States in toe-to-toe nu’clar combat with the Russkies.

You know what was cool? Missile Command for the PC. It was a modern remake in like, 1999 or so, by Atari, with 3D graphics and the like. You could map the controls how you liked, so I mapped the three cannons to the left and right buttons and wheel on my mouse.

Unfortunately the game never ran reliably on my computer and crashed all the time. I had unloaded it before I realized I had a faulty motherboard that couldn’t handle the game’s needs effectively.

Youshould have screen of the ‘enhanced’ version, it doesn’t look half bad.

Everything old sucks? When did I say that? I have great respect for Missile Command. It is undoubtedly a classic, but I just thought it was humorous to read a press release about it.

There are a TON of old-school arcade games that I love. Q-bert, Burger Time, and TRON to name a few.
