Gameover: Boulders Are Nature’s Pylons Edition

I’m happy to see Sony introducing the new 80GB PS3 with a pack-in copy of MotorStorm this August (thanks Kat). I got a chance to spend about an hour with MotorStorm this weekend for the first time and even though I’m not a fan of racing games I liked it.
The moment I started it up and watched the rolling video of the festival footage where everyone’s gathering out in the desert to party and race, I knew this is a fitting current-generation title for the PS3. It reminded me of the full-video menus in the Blu-ray version of Casino Royale. Other than the introductory videos, the game looks great. I later told James via voice chat out in the XMB that even though it’s easy for me to lose — I might take a ramp just a little too short or long and pancake against a ravine wall, letting my opponents pass me by — it’s still fun to play. That’s something I didn’t get from the MotorStorm demo. The opening level in the retail game is more fun. Racing games have never been a favorite genre of mine, but the physics in MotorStorm, how the vehicles feel, the multiple paths across the map, and the nothing-but-Rally-style racing are appealing. I was reminded about how just about the only parts of Gran Turismo 3 A-Spec (what was with that A-Spec moniker?) I enjoyed were the very few rally levels.
Oh and one more thing, boulders are to MotorStorm what concrete pylons are to Burnout. You’re not usually permitted to glance off them at high speed.
What did you play this weekend?
