Ferguson: Gears of War Extra Content Is Not Coming to the 360
There has been a lot of speculation over the extra content that will be in the PC version of Gears of War and whether it will come to the 360. Well, today that question was answered with a resounding no. Seems that size and a different engine build prevent Epic from distributing the game on Xbox Live as downloadable content.
Rod Ferguson, the producer of Gears of War on PC at Epic, stated that the newest build of the Unreal Engine 3.0 was used to create the game and there would be no way to get those assets over to the 360 in a manageable fashion. Also, it looks like the content on the PC is huge, and would go far beyond the max cap allowed by Microsoft for Live downloads. The second reason is a bit harder to swallow, because demos nowadays are huge on Live.
I don’t think this totally closes the door. Like Bethesda did with Oblivion for the PS3, a Gears of War collector’s compendium edition could be released for the 360, but it would probably go for the price of $40 at the least and more likely full price. But it seems like a way to get all the content to the 360 owner. Only problem with that scenario is the new engine, because with work progressing on Gears of War 2 (you know it is), they probably do not want to spend any more time with the first game.
