Bizarre Creations: DVD Size a “Problem” for PGR4

Submitted by on July 31, 2007 – 1:30 pm2 Comments

Honk if you need disk space! The decision for Microsoft to avoid including an HD-DVD drive in the Xbox 360 has hardly been a controversial one. It helped them keep the price of the console down and even now, the gaming benefit of Blu-Ray has yet to be fully demonstrated on the PS3. It seems, after comments from Bizarre Creations, the detriment of having only DVD and no standard hard drive on the Xbox 360 has finally begun to rear its ugly head.

Ben Ward, the Community and Web Lead over at Bizarre Creations, (yes, that Ben Ward) stated on the official forums that the limited space of a DVD has forced the developer to leave off the ability to have each race available in a day and night setting. Fans of PGR should remember that this was available for PGR3.

“You won’t see different times of day per city because this involves recreating all the textures again (one for day and one for night). Whilst this wasn’t a problem for our dev team, it was a problem fitting all this data onto a single DVD. So we’ve worked around the problem by providing different lighting models per city…”

Soon after Ben’s post and after a brief outcry on the forums, the Lead Environment Artist for Bizarre went into damage control. He stated that their weather effects would more than make up for the lack of day and night cycles,

“…so at it

I could care less as the weather effect will add on a whole new level of detail for the game. It might be nice, but in no way takes the value of the game down. PGR3 is still the best looking racer out and I imagine it will stay that way for a little while longer.

If Microsoft had waited a year they probably coulda developed a HD-DVD drive economically. But then they wouldn’t have gotten the head start they needed.

    it’s a pisser.
