The Spoiler Duck: Can it be Done?

Submitted by on June 25, 2007 – 9:45 pm3 Comments

Quack.
As much as I’m anticipating Metroid Prime 3: Corruption‘s launch this August, I’m wary of losing further portions of the experience to early spoilers. I say further because there was an early, long video of the game from IGN that spoiled some important stuff at the very beginning of the game. I can live with that, because it’s too late now and it’s not like I can have my memory erased and just act like it never happened.

So my goal now is to not hear any significant information about the upcoming Prime 3, so that when I play it, I can be surprised by things that happen. The original Prime was all new to me when I played it, but much of Prime 2 was ruined for me by the free demo disc I got from Nintendo and my unending thirst for information about the game before it was released.

Is it possible to avoid spoilers for a game like this while employed writing about the platform? Some information apparently came out today about the game and I’ve managed to scroll past it very quickly, but I can see this getting pretty challenging. That’s what brought all this to mind, actually.

Has anyone ever successfully avoided spoilers for upcoming games like this? Anyone still operating spoiler-free on Halo 3?

Ok, well, being that you write about this stuff daily, maybe you can’t avoid it, but anyone else surely can. I am completely spoiler free on Halo 3 and MP3. I am a huge metroid fan and thats why I avoid knowledge of the game. Halo 3 is easier for me since I don’t care quite as much. But, I read gaming sites every single day. The same goes for movies, I’m a big film buff and I always avoide spoilers. I even subscribe to magazines like Entertainment Weekly and regularly avoid the articles about movies I’m excited for. It’s not so much for me about ruining the story/plot or whatever, as it is about tainting my opinion of the product. If, for instance, I saw MP3 got poor reviews, or someone complained about something, I know that would be on my mind when I played the game and I want me experience to be completely organic without outside influence. I want to like or dislike a game for my own reasons. So yeah, staying spoiler free is totally plausible for the average gamer, it just takes a little care in your media consumption.

My post is pretty innocuous. The few things I do mention are either about the controls or basic Metroid conventions. I guess one part of it spoils the beginning of the game, but it’s the beginning.

Thanks, JC… but I have to confess, I did eventually end up reading the article… couldn’t resist. Was so happy that nothing was ruined. Happy to see you here.
