Sonic the Hedgehog is 16 this weekend.

So this weekend marks the 16th anniversary of the US and AU release of Sonic the Hedgehog on the Sega Genesis. That would be the first releases of the game worldwide, because unlike most Japanese games, Sonic hit the West first. Many sites are waving their arms about Sonic’s 16th birthday, but my favorite source for all things Sega (aside from Sega itself, of course) remains the Sega Nerds blog, where they point out not only that Sonic is 16, but that a bunch of Sonic fans on Phantasy Star Universe made a lot of noise to celebrate. They’ve got a video of it happening if you’re so inclined, but you’ll need to click through because it won’t play embedded.

I find it surprising that it’s been 16 years since Sonic’s first appearance. I remember Sonic as the game that sold me the platform, and made me forget about Super Mario World for a while. I don’t know which is stronger, the feeling of nostalgia, as I remember the first time I saw the game very clearly, or the sense that I’m really getting old, because… well, because I clearly remember something that happened more than a decade and a half ago.

Let’s reminisce. What’s your favorite Sonic game? Mine is either Sonic 2 on the Genesis, or Sonic Rush on the Nintendo DS.
