PS3 Tekken Getting Online Play, Practice, Survival Modes

Submitted by on June 13, 2007 – 12:30 pm3 Comments

Tekken5Kotaku has reported that the PS3 version of Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection is going to get a patch which will add at least three things. One, online versus play! Two, a Practice mode, and three, a Survival mode.

I’m completely surprised by the first. No release date has been given for the patch, but if Famitsu is right this could be really big. I think most Tekken fans would really like the rest of the features from the PSP version of Tekken 5 added in, including the ghost downloading feature, so let’s hope some of that makes it into the patch as well.

Heck even I’d buy it if it had online play done right. That means leaderboards so I can try and claw myself up from the bottom 0.05% of players over time. There’s got to be somebody worse than me at fighting games, right? Somebody? Anybody? Bueller?

What’s even more interesting is that apparently, (according to NeoGaf who translated the Famitsu mag) the online play patch will be FREE in the core game but the extra modes will be only $10 to anyone who already owns the current version.

Yes I think the article did mention that the patch will be incorporated into the game as the new version sold on the PSN with the patch avaialble for those who bought the old version.

Not sure if they’ll keep the price the same, though. Would be nice.

Gamespot has gotten more details on the patch:

Headlining the update will be the addition of a feature-heavy online mode. Fighters can participate in ranked and nonranked matches, with matchmaking options including an opti match, quick match, custom match, and friend match.

Further fueling the competition, players can view their opponents’ stats and voice-chat with one another while observing others’ fisticuffs. The online mode will also include a news ticker, which will be regularly updated with the weekly, monthly, and overall rank leaders.

Also included in the update will be two new single-player modes. Practice mode affords you a virtual dojo, where you can practice your moves. Survival mode tasks you with defeating as many opponents as possible with a limited health bar.
