oblivion_200.jpgDespite suffering from a rotten summer cold, I still played some games and spent time with family this weekend. I went to my father-in-law’s 60th birthday celebration yesterday and we all had fun wishing him well and another 60 more. Generationally you’d think he’d look down his nose at gaming, but he’s tried more than a couple of games I’ve shown him over time and has fun with them at the time. Unfortunately he suffers from a sensitivity to motion sickness from 3D games that my wife inherited from him, so I’ve tried to suggest more casual, 2D games for him to play on the PC.

A few days ago I started playing Oblivion on the PS3, using the official game guide to help me understand how the game really works and how to build a character that will hold up throughout the game and be fun for me to play. The guide is invalulable in this respect — probably an advantage of being updated for the PS3 a full year after the 360 and PC versions appeared — and so far I’m really enjoying the game. The first night I played it I completely forgot about the Fast Travel option so I spent significant amounts of time running from Fort Nickel just west of the Imperial City and back to the Market District to sell off what little I could carry with me. Once I remembered what Fast Travel got me things started moving along more quickly, but I’m still strapped for cash.

As I loaded up the car yesterday for the not-too-bad 1.5 hour trip to my in-laws with the kids, I thought for just a moment that it would be really nice if I could just click an icon and get there. My 4 1/2 year-old daughter has gotten into the habit of asking that time-worn age-old question “Are we there yet?” in its various forms.

What did you play this weekend?

Halo 3 Beta and a little Forza 2. It’s now time to finish all the games I’ve been neglecting. I have until September 25th :)

I find it much more enjoyable to pack off the wife and kids to these family get-togethers so i can play my games at home in peace and quiet.
