Gameover: Coward! Fighting Won’t Help! Edition

Killzone LiberationA houseguest stayed over last night, choosing to sleep on the couch and be awakened by the insistent demands of my kids seeking breakfast and otherwise greeting the day with playful enthusiasm. As a normal mortal, our guest went to bed at around the same time my wife did, putting my PS3 out of reach. This was an excellent opportunity for me to get some extra sleep.

Of course I didn’t do that.

I spent the next two hours hunkered down, sitting on a folding chair in the dim light of my bedroom while my wife slept. I had headphones on and was waging war on the Helghast in the excellent Killzone: Liberation on the PSP. I’d made it through Chapter 1 during the day while waiting for my daughter’s dance numbers at her recital and was now driven to get the best medals I could in the Challenge rounds associated with Chapter 1.

I would’ve been happy with Bronze or Silver medals had they just been for bragging rights, but Gold medals get you a perk or two for your character to use in the single player mode. Things like being able to carry an extra syringe to heal buddies and an extra fragmentation grenade to take out those mean Helghast will come in handy, and I managed to nail down Gold medals across the board after two hours of focused play.

What kept me going repeating the same scenarios over and over again? I was inching closer and closer to the times required, spending what felt like the last 45 minutes replaying scenarios where I was sometimes just one or two seconds short of the required time.

How was your gaming weekend?

Not bad. I completed Metroid II (and wrote a review), spent some time racing in Mario Kart on the Cube and enjoying myself there, played some Zelda and picked up a few more of the bugs, spent some more time wandering lost around the final castle in the game.

I’m surprised at how hard some of the puzzles are near the end of the game.

I played a lot of Okami, which turned out to be much better than I expected. I think I like it more than Twilight Princess. It also brings out the obsessive collector in me, although I try to ignore it as the game is long enough as is.

I also played through Wario Ware Touched! which is pretty good even if it isn’t on the level of something like Smooth Moves.

I also started Mario and Luigi: Partner’s in Time, which does very little new, but is still pretty good, switching the sets of brothers on the two different screens is a very good puzzle mechanic idea. Hopefully things will get more complex later in the game though.

I also picked up Rocket Slime for the DS and am underwhelmed so far. It got good reviews so I’m hoping it picks up.

    I play too many videogames.

Tons of Halo 3 and tons of Forza 2. Bungie has a way of screwing up my sleeping patterns. I also got into the whole customization of cars in Forza, specially since I picked Asia as my region and you can customize the heck out of those cars. I also spent hours designing paint jobs on my Fairlady Z and my Supra.

It was a very fun weekend.
