Full 333mhz Unlocked In PSP 3.50 Firmware

The newest 3.50 firmware is skimpy on end-user features since it just offers something not everyone will use — Remote Play of a PS3 via the internet — but it turns out there’s more to it under the hood.

There was a rumor recently that the firmware update also finally took the reins off the handheld’s CPU, allowing developers to use all 333MHz of it instead of its former maximum of 266MHz. Developers have confirmed this rumor, citing an updated SDK that requires the 3.50 firmware granting that full CPU access.

What’s this mean for existing games? Nothing. Only new games built for the 3.50 firmware will be able to get that extra juice. PSPFanBoy also does the obligatory battery-life hand wringing, and ShackNews thinks they’re so smart by saying this lends credence to a PSP redesign needing to have a longer-life battery (or a lower power profile to balance things out).

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, just go and buy the extended life battery (2200 MAh, to replace the 1800 MAh one it ships with). I never have to worry about that sucker running out on me. And really, why Sony doesn’t ship the PSP with it in the first place is a mystery to me.
