What is the Eldin Bridge bug?

After finding out that my replacement Zelda disc fixed the bug involving Shad and the Sky Cannon in Twilight Princess, I set out to find out exactly what the Eldin Bridge bug was and whether this version of the disc fixes it. In that adventure I found a video on YouTube claiming to show the situation Link ends up in, and I contacted the person who posted that video. Here’s the video and an explanation. Spoilers within.
After chatting with this unfortunate gamer, I managed to put together an explanation of what happened.
When this happens in the game
After completing the Forest Temple and Death Mountain, you set out across Hyrule Field to the north in the search for your missing friend Ilia. Midna instructs you to meet someone in Lanayru, which is in the darkness north of Hyrule field. That means you need to cross Eldin Bridge. When you cross Eldin Bridge and reach the other side, there are rocks blocking the path. You blow the rocks away with bombs, and a cutscene begins as a hole opens above you. A section in the middle of the bridge is vaporized and drawn into the portal, and three monsters are dropped, and the cutscene ends. It’s clobbering time.
What the game expects
The way these creatures work is, you need to defeat them all at once. If you leave one standing, it revives the others. When you kill them all, the portal in the sky is locked in place, and turns blue. In this situation, you can actually leave the screen and head down the path without fighting them, which is what I did when playing through the game because I got too close to the edge of the area while fighting and was surprised to find myself leaving… in every other situation you’re trapped by a force field until you beat these enemies, but not this time.
Then you’re supposed to move on down the path, since the bridge is out and there’s no other way to go. Shortly thereafter you enter the darkness and go about hunting for Ilia.
What happened instead
Immediately after the cutscene ended, a Save and Quit was done. Now, when the game is loaded, Link is standing in Kakariko village, which is south of Hyrule Field: on the wrong side of the bridge. The bridge is out, so there’s no way across, and the only open path at this point is the one across the bridge. This is the game save that I tried out on my system, confirming that the newer version of the Twilight Princess disc does not resolve the issue after the fact, as it does for the bug in the cannon room. It’s also the situation depicted in the video.
My next step is going to be to find a save shortly before this point and see if I can replicate the bug with my version of the disc, and find someone with the older version to see if they can do it too. Thanks go to Autumn for taking the time to explain the situation to me, and for providing the game save so I can see for myself.
