Ratchet and Clank FTOD To Be Single Player Only

Submitted by on May 11, 2007 – 5:00 pm4 Comments

rncftod_clankhuddled.pngInsomniac caught IGN and everybody else off guard when they revealed in a new interview that Ratchet and Clank: Future Tools Of Destruction will be a single-player only game when it reaches retail. The surprise expressed by IGN is accurately captured in their followup questions. With Resistance as the PS3′s flagship online title, not having multiplayer — online or offline — in RNCFTOD is a nontrivial letdown.

While it is possible that online multiplayer could be added later via an expansion, Insomniac’s Allgeier said it was too early to tell at this phase. They’re focused on getting the “very, very large” game done, and can’t give a release date.

I’m disappointed to hear it’ll be an offline only game because I had hope that they’d tighten up the multiplayer from Deadlocked enough with just enough extra options to keep me playing instead of constantly getting steamrolled. That said, I’ve always played all of the Ratchet and Clank games from beginning to end, ferreting out every last treasure from every nook and cranny. If this one’s quality is up to the series, I have no doubt I’ll dig out every last bit of platforming gold from it as well.

Boo! No online co-op for a game that always features two heroes!? That pretty much scratches this one off my list.

@James: One of those heroes is significantly smaller, doesn’t use any of the guns and is slower so could never keep up. Unless you want to press the “ride around on Ratchet’s back” button, I don’t know what you were expecting in co-op.

I’m not all that broken up over the lack of multi-player. I always bought them for the single player experience and it’s good to know that’s getting back to what it was. Levels in Deadlocked were too short for my taste.

This should not surprise anyone. Without a unified server base run by Sony, you will not have consistant multiplayer titles for the platform. Sony needs to bite the bullet and start paying for the underlying infrastructure needed for online gaming. Xbox Live may cost money, but look at the plethora of games that have multiplayer. When the game developers don’t have to worry about bandwidth and servers, they can focus on multiplayer implemetation.

@Joe: The game developers don’t have to worry about bandwidth and servers? Have you talked to EA and Sega? Their deals to use Xbox Live only happened, if memory serves, once Microsoft opened up their network to 3rd party servers.

I’ve never seen a developer come out and say “We didn’t add multiplayer to game X because we were afraid of the server and bandwidth costs. We weren’t worried about writing good network code and hitting our development targets at all — we’re that good!” Have you read that anywhere?

Your comment is a non-starter with Insomniac. They’ve already proven their server, matchmaking, and network code technologies with Resistance, as the IGN interviewer mentioned. This is why this decision is a surprise to fans.
