I don’t mind the remakes so much.

In a recent article I admonished our readers to hold off on buying Final Fantasy IV, V, and IV Advance for GBA, because Square-Enix is on the remake rampage and are now working on Final Fantasy IV, remade a la FFIII, for the DS. As I said, it made me grit my teeth to hear about it, but I’m not upset. Why not? Well, because I already played the game on the SNES (well, the watered-down mess we got in the US anyway) and I’m ready to play it again in a different style.

Mind you, III was easier to swallow for everyone because it was never released in the US in any form. Still, it’s nice to see the old games in a new light.

One of the best parts of playing a remade game is seeing all the little things that remind you of the original, while relishing all the things that are just so much better. Another great example of this is Metroid: Zero Mission on Game Boy Advance, which was a remake of the original Metroid on NES. It was an enhanced remake in every sense. Rebuilt from the ground up, with the same general storyline, greatly expanded upon and improved in every way. I’m allowed to say that, because I love the franchise and you know what, the original Metroid plays like crap now. MZM looks and sounds better, the maps are better, there are even new areas that help tie it into the later games in the series better. 25% of the game actually takes place in the time after the original game ends.

Back to Final Fantasy, Final Fantasy: Dawn of Souls on GBA is a port of the Wonder Swan remakes of Final Fantasy I and II. With III and IV on DS, we’ll likely see V and VI next. Will we see I and II remade yet again, this time in 3D for the DS? I wouldn’t complain. These games are classics, in my opinion much better than those that came after (including VII, now) and the Tose ports of IV V and VI to GBA are pretty unsatisfactory work. The baffling pauses in the battles in IV are pretty irritating, at least. The work that went into III was much more impressive and I’m looking forward to the real greats of the series, which are the three from the SNES, in their new skins.

I don’t mind remakes that much either. There are some games that I normally wouldn’t have played but then a remake comes along and it sparks an interest. :)

The only remakes I picked up for the GBA were the ones that were never released in North America (II and V), although the retooling of the first game was extremely well done. I never had plans to ever pick up IV or VI on the GBA, because I didn’t really see any major upgrade from the SNES carts.

But a 3D remake on the DS? I’m all over that like horny idiots on an ottoman.

I have to disagree with you on Metroid: Zero Mission. It’s prettier, sure, but has zero of the atmosphere of the original and it holds your hand through the entire game, showing you where to go next. But, getting (and completing) MZM allows me to play the original Metroid on the GBA (and save $20 by not needing to pick up the Metroid “classics” GBA cart).
