Hellgate: London to Have a Subscription Model

Submitted by on May 9, 2007 – 12:28 am2 Comments

eedb934f5ed83d00df88460440d01383_portfolio_large.jpgHellgate: London was created with a multiplayer mode from the start, but it now seems as if there may be a paid subscription model to get the best access to online play.

While the game will have a free mode of play, if you want access to faster servers, round the clock support, no waiting for server access and a larger inventory, be prepared to pay for the $9.95 a month “Elite” membership. While charging for extra for items like this is not new (Everquest II allowed players to pay extra for more characters and a bigger inventory), it seems strange coming from a company that was founded by some of the people responsible for Diablo. Diablo was widely successful for its free online multiplayer modes. For the Hellgate developers to want to charge faithful fans extra for a better mode of play seems counter-productive. It remains to be seen whether this will be successful or not, but I have to think that Hellgate fans will revolt against the subscription fee.

If the game rocks as hard as the Diablo games its creators made before it, people will pay for that privilege.

I think the perks are a nice setup. It lets the casual people play and enjoy the game’s core mechanics while offering premium content for the folks who really get hooked.
