Halo 3 Energy Sword Details
An intrepid member of the Podtacular.com community was able to get into the custom gametypes menu (along with many others by this point) and in the midst of this revealed exactly how the energy sword is currently set to operate in Halo 3. Kimo23 reported the following on the Podtacular forums:
We tried out the wraith, pistol, sword which are all very cool. Pistol is 5 headshot kill, but it is almost impossible to get a headshot. Sword takes about 5 seconds to use after you activate it (it also now has battery). the lunge is also way shorter, and you can’t swing as fast. The wraith sort of floats along the ground, sort of like a very slow ghost (at least thats how it felt). the main gun is basically the same, but now you can have two people in the tank. 1 driver/main gun, and the second person is the turret!!!!
So, a lot of info there. The pistol sounds about right, though I’m not sure how I feel about the new energy sword. Having a battery is a good thing, I suppose, but nerfing the lunge distance and attack speed is only going to make it more vulnerable to the shotgun, especially once you factor in the shotgun’s seemingly improved hit detection.
But we don’t really know if the energy sword as it currently exists in the beta is even the final design that Bungie would’ve wanted us to play. It’s entirely possible that the sword’s absence so far has been due to a need for more tweaking, so we can only watch and wait, I suppose.
And the new wraith mechanic seems like it’ll be fun.
mini-Update: Gamevideos.com has an energy sword gameplay video.
