Review: Dragon Ball Z – Ultimate Tenkaichi (PS3)

October 28, 2011 – 12:44 pm |

I really liked last year’s DBZ game, Dragon Ball Z: Burst Limit 2. It felt like the franchise had finally achieved some serious attention with a game that was both deep and fun.
This year, we …

CON:RTA Dual WieldingWelcome to Monday. How did your gaming weekend go?

Saturday night I spent some time with James playing Champions of Norrath: Return To Arms. This classic seems to have fallen out of print, despite its popularity — the online lobby is pretty active with people chatting and trying to set up games.

Despite the PS3 making the PS2 game load faster and generally connect online faster, we did end up having a couple of connectivity problems. It was very rare for us to successfully get three or four guys into the game on the PS2 back in the day, so to see it in arena mode with the two of us was disappointing. With luck we’ll see if the PS3 makes 4-player in the campaign mode work better.

We really need a quality fantasy dungeon crawler for the PS3 sooner rather than later. Despite the fun factor of Marvel Ultimate Alliance’s slugfest, the draw of better and better loot and flashy, varied spells can’t be underestimated.

Sunday night was a late night for me. I spent an excruciating hour or so protecting a translator in the Hard mode of God of War II followed by a hair-pulling fight against the three-headed green dogs that cough out their rapidly-maturing pups. It physically hurt me when I made it through the dogs with a sliver of health, then died fighting off the mace-wielding heavies that should have been easier had I been more careful. Eventually I made it through, but I’m feeling it today.

I can already see James’ Resistance marathon was kicking in after midnight last night. What did you play?

Man, that’s funny. I just FINALLY found a copy of Return to Arms at my local gamestop that didn’t cost an arm and a leg. I’ve been looking for it for about 6 months off and on since I started actively working through my list of games to beat before I die. They had a pretty sweet “buy 2 get 1 free” on all used games so I grabbed Fable and Soul Calibur II. 2 more games that I never got around to that I always wanted to pick up. I started out on Fable first and that’s going well. It’s looking to be pretty fun so far. Lots of cutscenes but I’m enjoying them so that’s nice. I love the good/evil element as it really makes you think about what you do before you do it. I used to play a lot of Baldurs gate back in the day and as long as no was around, you could pretty much ransack every house in the village. Not the best thing to do for good characters, but in the game world with no ramifications? Why not? Well, in Fable there ARE ramifications. I don’t know what they are but damnit, it sure sucks to see that little picture of you with horns pop up everytime you accidentally shoot a civilian in the heat of battle. Anyway, yeah, lots of good catchup gaming this weekend for me, and likely lots more to come. My backlog of xbox and ps2 games is enormous.
