Gameover: Hulk Smash Sandbox Edition
Last week a visit to my pal Tom had us take a lazy tour through some of his PS2 memory card saves on his PS3 as he searched for something and I noticed a save for The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction. I’d played a demo of it and asked if the final game was good.
It turns it not only was it good, it’s really good. I spent a few minutes fiddling around in the fun city-sandbox-like environment as the super-powered Hulk and once I got home I immediately put the game at the top of my GameFly queue. On Friday I got it, and I haven’t looked back.
The Hulk: Ultimate Destruction just feels and plays right, even on the PS2, and especially with the PS3 upscaling from last week’s update. The sandbox doesn’t seem to feel as limited as it should — you don’t notice a particular point at which stuff you’ve busted up is forgotten about by the console due to memory limitations. You know it does, but you’re so busy being big green and mean that you don’t notice it. The designers did their job and did it well.
I’ve barely scratched the surface of the game’s story, but so far it seems to be pretty good. The voice acting is decent and it’s not linked to the stinker of a Hulk movie that came out what must be four years ago now. Nobody will miss that flick.
So go and find The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction and take the big green guy for a spin. Once you get a feel for how sweet it is to leap from one skyscraper onto another one, grab on, then run up the side of it, crunching concrete as you go you’ll get a good idea how much fun a superhero sandbox game can be.
Other than that I’ve been reeling from general sleep deprivation so I kept my weekend gaming sessions down to a dull roar to try and catch up.
Have you played this Hulk game? What did you play this weekend?
