First import title on VC sets a precedent. What’s next?

Last week’s US release of Battle Lode Runner on the Wii Virtual Console was remarkable for one fact: this is the game’s first release in the territory. That makes it the service’s first import title in the US. I see this as a precedent by Hudson, paving the way for another PCEngine title: the Super CD game Akumajou Dracula X: Chi no Rondo. Particularly as Konami owns 54% of Hudson now, and the fact that the game is appearing in the upcoming Dracula X Chronicles for PSP, I definitely can see this happening.

But not at 600 points. I would fully expect the game to appear, with the audio compressed (since the Wii does MP3s) at a price of 800 points, just as R-Type for the TG-16 did.

It will be interesting to see how localization is done, considering the game has spoken Japanese dialogue. I imagine they’ll localize the game and use the same image for the PSP and Wii games.

Ideally, they would simply release Dracula X Chronicles in its entirety as Wii Ware. I’d probably pay 1500 points for that, I think. How much do you think that would be worth?

1500 points sounds about right. I really hope this is a sign of things to come. There are lots of import games worthy of bringing over from Europe as well as Japan.

This gives Nintendo even bigger points with its already energized user base.

Letting content owners localize to the US and release on their service can build a whole new segment of the downloadable game market, one in which everybody wins. Consumers get games they wanted on older systems but couldn’t get, producers get to invest just in localization and not have to produce boxes, cartridges, or discs for their existing IP, and Nintendo gets a royalty. As long as the prices are low enough this is great.

But with so many games on the Virtual Console, I’m wondering if you’ll be needing bigger flash storage? Maybe they’re small, but these ports from other consoles might be bigger.

The storage is expandable infinitely with SD Cards, but software cannot be executed from the SD Card, only from the Wii Menu. So you can put the games in storage and forget about them for a while, but it’s just as easy to delete the games from the system and just redownload them free later. The downloads are linked to your My Nintendo account so it tracks everything along with your points. Redownloading games is quick and easy.

All would be forgiven if they’d just let us run the games from the SD Card. You could pick up one huge SD Card (like 2 GB or something) and never have to worry about anything again. I have 10 Virtual Console games and still have almost no space used of my 512MB internal storage though, so I wonder if I’ll ever encounter this issue.
