Everybody Votes suddenly smelling like market research.

No sooner did I post a review mentioning how the Everybody Votes Channel’s questions are “light fare, often opinion based” than a somewhat surprising question appeared on the service: “How do you prefer to buy music?” The choices are Download or CD. After questions like “Can you snap your fingers?” and “Which American Idol contestant will go further?” I found this kind of off.

I fully expected Everybody Votes to be used for polling that might influence Nintendo’s future Wii Channels releases and the like, but this is the first one that seems to directly point in that direction. Could a large response of “Download” encourage a music download channel? I can’t imagine Nintendo inventing a music store of their own, but iTunes on the Wii is not impossible.

Duh? I mean, this is a really easy way to get demographic info for companies. And if they word it right, you’d never even know you were filling out a consumer survey.

MS sells ads on the Dashboard, Sony sells the “super compter” of networked PS3s, and Nintendo sells the usage of the everybody votes channel. Of course, I’m only assuming with Sony and Nintendo, but it sounds about right.

If you name an Ass a Pony it is still an Ass.
It is also a good first try to get research away from the suits and into the crowd

It’s not like you’re being forced into the channel through popups and you can’t play your Wii until you’ve voted X amount of times. I see nothing wrong with mixing in a few questions that will help develop their product. You have to figure when this came out that the answers would be harvested.

Now if you’re stuck having to pay for Wii Pro Edition minus Everyone Votes pop-ups, then we might have a problem.

Indeed, I think it’s a great idea. I do surveys willingly all the time, and I like that they’ve made them fun. I’m not complaining. When I say I found it “off,” I mean it didn’t seem to be quite the same kind of question as the others.

I like taking surveys, and I like making my opinion known. If I can influence something in my favor, all the better. Who cares if they’re doing market research?

I was the one who suggested the CD or Download question about a week ago! I can’t believe how it has grown such discussion all over the web, I knew that it was such a good one to ask with more people downloading today, or are they? Exactly! Hah.
