DS Phat Stylus Discontinued

Submitted by on May 30, 2007 – 7:05 pm7 Comments

Phat_Stylii.jpgLast week, my Wife came to me in distress. The stylus on her DS Phat had came apart, the top plastic piece popped right off and would no longer stay in the system. This was the fourth stylus that had the top pop off, the original stylus and three “official” Nintendo versions we had purchased since then.

So, after her temporarily using a Palm Pilot stylus for a few days, I took a trek down to the local Best Buy. I sifted through the aisle of worthless DS crap and found the sea of stylus’ (stylii?) There was no Phat to be found, anywhere. I asked one of the dead-weight employees there;

“Nope sorry, discontinued.” He looks quite dejected by my question.

“You get this question often?” I follow up.

“Yep, every day.” puffing his cheeks out while staring at the DS accessory rack.

My wife was quiet, she knew that I was going to be pissed off enough for both of us. It’s things like this that will drive you batty, discontinuing absolutely necessary accessories just to force people to upgrade to their newest revision. This wasn’t only at Best Buy, I checked Circuit City and Gamestop/EB, no dice.

You might be thinking, “Dude, just get a Lite.” The real problem is that my Wife doesn’t want a DS Lite, she thinks it feels cheap and weak compared to her clam shell Phat. I can’t blame her, although the screen on the Lite is far superior, it does feel cheap and hardly an upgrade. Overall, she doesn’t want one at all, which is what really matters.

So now she’s still tapping away at Puzzle Quest with her Palm stylus, which is actually more comfortable but with the lack of storage, she loses it every other day or so. I can’t see buying a new DS at this point, especially considering the fact that a new one is probably around the corner.

Did I mention I’m pissed off?

    3-packs of the original stylus are still available from Nintendo’s online store for $6.99. However, I probably have at least one still hanging around here somewhere I can send you. Well, maybe. I may have sent them all off with my original DS when I sold it.

    I imagine it’s an issue where demand has fallen so low for the item that it doesn’t make sense for Gamestop to stock it.

    If you want to find it in their online store (where stupidly nothing is linkable because it’s all dynamic) the fastest way is to type “stylus” in the search bar and it’s there among maybe a half dozen matches right away. Or you can browse to it by system but it takes longer.

    How about ya save a couple bucks and use a pen with no ink? Then again this hi-tech stuff is over my head.

    Yeah, you can find most stuff at Nintendo’s online store like replacement DS lithium ion batteries, styluses, stylii, stylus (whichever plural is correct!), and even empty DS cases which are awesome for making hard cases for GBA games for for lost cases or games that come with the system in stupid cardboard sleeves. Sucks that you can’t get the stylus in store, tho.

    They have this fancy thing now called eBay, where you can buy all kinds of discontinued stuff :P

    Many moons ago before I wrote for Aeropause, I submitted this to Kotaku. It only fits the original system’s stylii. Take a broken one, tape it inside, and attach the keychain to the system’s wrist strap. I use it even on my DS Lite. Or, buy any other DS stylus (aka Touch Pen) with a keychain attachment, or a hole big enough to stick a keychain through.
