Banning of Modded 360′s Begins
Today was the beginning of the crackdown on modded DVD firmware that is allowing people to play burned games. Microsoft has banned any Gamertag that has been detected to have a modded DVD drive. Most of the popular mod sites are experiencing outages as people try to find ways to fix the problem. Microsoft has most likely used the Halo 3 beta as a way to roll out and test for modded consoles. As they say, cheaters never prosper.
NOTE: It was pointed out that Microsoft is banning the hardware, not the Gamertags. You will still be able to use your Gamertag on another 360.

Not true. They did not ban gamertags. They banned the console itself. The people who got banned are free to use their gamertag on Live with an unbanned console.
Don’t ever buy a 360 off ebay now. If it’s banned you won’t have much recourse.
Bill is correct. Console ID’s are banned, not the Xbox Live Accounts or Gamertags. Also, it is currently unclear whether Microsoft is detecting modified drives, or backup copies. The difference is moot to most of us and pretty much a technicality.
Also, it’s also more likely that the Halo 3 Beta is just an incidental player in all this and that the Spring Update is when the change happened that allowed MS to find modded consoles. Then, it should be obvious that there’s no more tempting target to a modder than a fat, juicy backup of Crackdown that allows them to play the Halo 3 beta. Then, once that backup is detected, BANHAMMER!
What is especially funny to me is how people are getting pissed off and declaring their hatred for MS because of this. They’re screaming, asking for boycotts, that kind of garbage. Hilarious.
MS did the same thing with the Xbox so I don’t know why it’s so suprising to people to be banned now. Like MS was going to let people play pirate copies of games on Live forever.
lol its funny its like saying come on were just trying to cheat give us a break lol
My bad. I honestly thought it was Gamertags that were banned. Similar to how Steam bans usernames.
