Review: Columns (Virtual Console)

Genesis, 1991; VC release 4 December 2006; 800 Points.
What is it?
Columns is a puzzle game where groups of three colorful gems drop from the top of the screen. You can change the order they appear in within the group as they’re falling. The goal is to make groups of three of a kind when they hit the bottom, at which point the three or more will vanish, and the gems on top will slide down. It’s a pretty simple concept, somewhere between Dr. Mario and Tetris really.
How does it play?
Well, you use the D-pad and one buttons, which shuffles the gems within the group of three. The controls are “good enough”, but it feels a little strange that you don’t get to rotate the stack as it’s falling. I suppose the game would be too easy then. That makes me think of Meteos, where you can only move blocks vertically. A lot of people don’t get that when they first play… ok, back to Columns.
How does it look and sound?
For a game full of gems, this really seems to lack polish. The graphics and sound in the game really feel rushed, and these are very important elements in a puzzle game like this where you’re staring at the same thing for long periods of time. Sega was capable of much more impressive things at this point and this game is disappointing.
How is the replay value?
I would have to say strong, which is an automatic feature of a puzzle game. Puzzle games are pretty ideal for the Virtual Console because in most cases, the gameplay is there and thus they age well. But puzzle games really weren’t the Genesis’ strong point. Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine (Puyo Puyo) is really a better game than this one, and there’s a lot more depth to it. 2-player mode may add some to the value if you can find someone else who will play the game with you.
Is it worth it?
No. Columns doesn’t stand up to modern puzzle games in any way, and more acclaimed games like Mean Bean Machine and Wario’s Woods are available on the Virtual Console as an alternative at the same and lower prices. Unless you’re familiar with the formula and know you like it… and don’t go on your memory of how the game is… I would recommend putting your points elsewhere.
