Opera 9 Wii micro-review.

netcable.pngCheck this out. I’m writing this from my Wii. The browser is so drastically improved from the beta version that I find myself wishing I could use it on my crappy Windows machine.

Now that I’m back on said crappy Windows machine, I find that there’s just no replacement for a keyboard. And there you have it: the single feature that sets using the Wii Internet Channel apart from using a web browser on a computer. I wish I could surf with the Wii Remote all the time, and type with a keyboard as needed. If I could do that, I’d probably do most everything on the Wii browser and let Windows rot.

The browser and everything within it loads much faster, zooming in and out is smooth and the range on it is way broader than you’ll ever need. Favorites are smaller on the screen and easier to use. It’s just an all-around sweet browser that’s easy and fun to use. You need to check it out.

And let’s face it, you’re not gonna beat the value on this. It’s free, it’s pretty, and it works really well. Nice work by Opera. Go pick this one up if you haven’t already.

The Wii is just this close to being that “Home Internet Convergence” device that everybody tried (and failed) to make in the late ’90s.

If they release a small wireless keyboard and their own plug-and-play WiFi solution (like, plug directly into a cable modem, not their current PC-based dongle), you could sell Wiis to your Grandparents as All The Computer They’d Ever Need. Plus it plays games.

I am definitely eager to take the Opera browser for the Wii for a spin. I hope to so do soon.

Opera’s a great company I can fully get behind because they do one thing and do it really, really well.

That said, the success of the Wii version of Opera hinges on one thing: updates. If it can be updated for free on an ongoing basis to improve rendering and keep up with advances on the web, including Flash and similar scripting things, then it’ll remain a winner. If not, it’ll fall behind fast.

That’ll take money, though, money from Nintendo. They could actually make the Internet Channel their first subscription service since Opera will not give away updates for free. I’d pay it if I had a Wii, but would Joe Nintendo Consumer?

    Yes. Yes I would.
    ;-)

Seriously though, I have the beta and I think the full version will be getting downloaded tomorrow to spare the clamour to use the Mac laptop.

LOL Joe Nintendo Consumer! Well done!!

Paul, the update from beta to full is done using the “Update” button in the Wii Shop Channel. I don’t see why they couldn’t allow updates to the browser. In fact, I see it as critical. The browser still doesn’t support Flash 8 or newer, meaning you still can’t watch most videos on the web (though YouTube, perhaps the most important, still works). I imagine it’s a RAM constraint, but with a little extra coding, RAM disks can be created using any kind of storage… it’s old technology, and it would be a slow solution but a solution nonetheless.

The dongle… how I hate the dongle. I use it for my DS… it doesn’t work unless my laptop is awake, and every so often it craps out for no reason and I have to uninstall the software and reinstall it.
