Ones to Watch: April 2007 Wii Releases
April showers, May flowers, taxes and blah blah here’s some games for Wii that come out in April. We’ve got some sliders from last month and some that have been sitting patiently with an April date for a while. Off we go.
The obvious pick of the month would be Super Paper Mario. SPM started out as a Gamecube game just like Twilight Princess did, and was at some point in its development moved over to the Wii. A smart move, for sure. Information on the game shows that Wii integration is tight, but slight, which is unsurprising considering developer Intelligent Systems is behind the game, and they’re one of Nintendo’s sharpest in-house development teams.
Those without the plumber affinity might find interest in the latest iteration of the long-running puzzle franchise Bust-A-Move… that’s Puzzle Bobble overseas. Eight-player madness promised from that one. We’ll also see Ubisoft’s latest shoveling of a last-gen port onto a Wii disc in Rival Swords, which nonetheless looks pretty sharp. Read on for more info on all these games.

OF PERSIA: RIVAL SWORDS style="font-style: italic;">
Ubisoft
Montreal/Ubisoft
From the game’s
IGN page:
Based on 2005′s Prince of Persia: The Two
Thrones,
this first entry in the series for the Wii takes advantage of the
system’s revolutionary controllers. Players will be able to clash
swords with enemies, execute speed kills and perform the Prince’s
well-known acrobatic moves such as running on walls. The game creates
an epic experience by combining two playable characters in gameplay
that mixes combat, platforming, puzzles and a compelling storyline.
This game slipped from March to April. I played through (and loved)
Sands of Time, but missed out on its two successors. I have heard they
were inferior to Sands, so didn’t think I’d missed much. This edition
of the game looks very appealing to me, though. I would want to play
through Warrior Within first, so it will have to wait.

PAPER MARIO
Intelligent Systems/Nintendo
site.
Paper Mario 2: The Thousand Year Door was a great game on the Cube. The
standard comment on this new game is that unlike the previous two Paper
Mario games, which were RPGs with some action platforming, this is the
other way around. You know what? Everything I’ve played that was made
by IS has been great, so sign me up. Super Paper Mario is my Wii pick
of the month, sight unseen.

site:
“The non-stop puzzle action of Bust-A-Move is now on your Nintendo Wii!
Old favorites Bub and Bob return with some new friends and game modes
designed to take advantage of your Wii Remote. Face an all angle
assault of bubbles in Shooting Mode, play up to 7 friends in VS. Mode,
test your endurance in Endless Mode, or enjoy the classic Puzzle Mode
from previous iterations of the franchise. If you’re just discovering
the challenging puzzle action, or are a returning expert bubble
launcher, you’ll be sure to find loads of bubble bursting fun in
Bust-A-Move Bash!
- Four game modes: Puzzle, Endless, Vs. and the brand
new Shooting Mode - Vs. Mode supports up to 8 players simultaneously!
- Master 500 levels in 5 Puzzle Mode areas
- 10 different playable characters including franchise
favorites Bub and Bob plus many new additions - Use both the Wii Remote, Nunchuk or Classic
controller to hit bubbles coming from all directions in Shooting Mode - New “Hyper” option speeds up gameplay while the
“Slip”
option lets you connect your fired bubbles to similar colors even if
your aim is off - Gallery Mode lets players access in-game artwork”
OK, are you ready for this? Apparently four Wii Remotes and four
Nunchuks are shared among eight players at once. Four Wii Remotes, four
Nunchuks, four pairs of players wired to each other during gameplay. I
can’t look!
Bonus points to the developer Happy Happenings for incorporating an
arrangement of the main game theme song from Bust-A-Move into the
trailer. I hope it makes the game. You know I have that original song
as a ringtone on my phone? I kid you not! Also, I love their name.
Happy Happenings? How can you disapprove of that?
