NOA replaces my Zelda disc, and then some.

spider-heisourhero.pngThis bug’s for you, Kat.

Not long ago I mentioned that I was sending in my Twilight Princess disc for replacement due to the sky cannon bug. On the phone, I had been told exactly how to send it back, and that they’d replace my disc with a newer revision, fixing the bug.

Today it arrived in a UPS Express envelope, but they sent me the whole retail package, not just the disc back. That’s OK, I can always use more game cases. And a backup manual. I suppose.

My only real concern is that there is no visible difference, such as a version number, apparent on the disc or literature. Not sure where I would find the version number in the game, either. So I went and downloaded a couple of bad saves online to test.

Starting the new Zelda disc the first time brings a message, “Initiating System Update.” On confirmation, it does a very quick update (apparently from the disc), and then brings you back to the Wii Menu.

I picked up a game save called “Tommy” on the Gamefaqs board, here. The one marked “hanginggarden3″. Upon opening the game, Shad is in the room. Speaking to him makes him leave.

I’m still trying to find out what the Eldin Bridge Bug is because it’s not apparent in the game save I found, so I haven’t been able to test it. Most of what I’m seeing online seems to say it’s not a bug, just someone who got stuck and didn’t know where to go next in the game. I’ll keep you posted if I find anything new.

Nintendo replacing buggy Zelda discs.
My near miss with the game ending Zelda bug.

Uhh, thanks, I think. *gets out flyswatter*

Aha, system updates via disc. Sounds to me like a firmware bug was at least part of the problem with the game.

I’m guessing it took a firmware update to allow firmware updates from disc. This may mean we’ll see online patching of games in the future through WiiConnect24. My stance on that is already common knowledge.

Check the disc for the version number. There’s a serial etched on the bottom near the inner ring. The original version was RVL-RZDE-0A-0 JPN (The JPN part is weird in itself because it should say USA).

Is the game updating your save to be compatible with the new Zelda version? If you replace your save with a bad one again, will it do the update again? If you don’t have any saves and start the game, does it NOT do an update?

  • Stephen (Aeropause)

MB, I checked that serial first thing and it’s unchanged from the disc I sent in: RVL-RZDE-USA was the original, and this one’s the same.

Cory, it’s not the save. It only updated the first time I ran it, even though I moved a number of different saves in and out of the system. The bad save wasn’t in the system when I first launched the game, either. There’s the slim chance it changed the firmware to make it check the saves and fix them each time it loads, I suppose.

I wonder if the retail copies of Zelda TP have the bug-fixed version or if they only send the replacement to the few people that save/quit at that particular point in the game

Still really great of Nintendo to provide a solution cause a lot of time can be invested up to that point… I mean your almost to the end of the game at that point
