“No Promises” SG Guitar Will Ever Work on PS3

SG_Guitar_no.jpgWhen Next Gen Sony owners realized the harsh reality about compatibility, or lack thereof, between the Guitar Hero SG Controller and the PS3, it wasn’t pretty. After all of Sony’s comments regarding their focus on backwards compatibility, they decided to leave off Guitar Hero, one of most important games for the PS2.

There’s definitely two different ways to take recent comments from the co-founder and president of RedOctane. Kai Huang has given, “No Promises” regarding whether a solution will be found with Sony. As Guitar Hero 3 lurches toward retail this November with a new guitar to roll along with it, the likeliness of the SG guitar being put out to pasture is almost definite.

One one side, for those looking to enjoy their old Guitar Hero, even hearing that RedOctane is still in talks with Sony to find a solution can be considered a positive. I, for one, had thought that they’d completely dropped the idea of making the Guitar compatible knowing full well that Guitar Hero 3 was squeezing down the sequel sewage pipe in November. Why would RedOctane want to A) listen to complaining owners of the original SG guitar when it doesn’t work with GH3 or B) gimp sales of their PS3 guitar which will probably be more expensive (and not compatible with the PS2).

Sadly, I really think that if they had any plans of making the guitar compatible, it would’ve already been done. Sony developed their USB Memory Card adapter long before the PS3 was released because, well, it was important. The SG guitar will cost Sony and RedOctane more money than it will make them in the long run, which is what it’s all about. I’ve already unloaded my copy of Guitar Hero (never picked up 2) and my SG guitar, knowing full well it’ll probably never be compatible.

This is why, in the past, games that relied on peripherals rarely gained much success. Franchises like Dance Dance Revolution have succeeded only because they’ve released numerous titles in succession to feed the fans who spent the extra thirty or so dollars on a dance pad. Now, with so many PS2 fans being punished by RedOctane and Sony, will people continue to invest in these extra peripherals with the fear of them soon being obsolete? Although it adds to the experience, should the game really require the guitar at all? Shouldn’t they have a requirement to make it fully compatible with the standard controller?

So what do you think? Will there ever be an official solution to get the SG controller working on the PS3 and if so, will it be GH3 compatible?

I’m very surprised at their reluctance to make the controller compatible. I agree that with GH3 announced, there’s no chance of compatibility now.

I bought a Dual Shock 2 to USB adapter that seems to work in some ways on the PS3, and works fine on the PC, actually, but I need to try it again and do a proper writeup of its usefulness on the PS3.

With the new 1.70 firmware supporting rumble, I wonder if the guitar was sending information through the rumble signal paths? Maybe it’ll work now if you use a USB connector like I linked to in the 1.70 firmware story?
