boom_boom_XBLA-4-11.jpgFanta…er…Boom Boom Rocket is live on the Marketplace today. Music games were a rare breed four or five years ago, now it seems like a new one is annouced each week. This is, however, the first music game to rock the Live Arcade. You see how I did that right there? “music game” and “rock the arcade?” That’s why I’m here.

I’m looking forward to seeing Boom Boom Rocket shine on my HDTV but aside of that, I don’t see myself buying into it just yet. Let me know if you did and what you think of it. Is ten total songs really worth the 800 points ($10 US)?

Full specs inside:

Boom Boom Rocket‚Ñ¢ is a rhythm music game where you detonate beautiful fireworks in time to remixed classical music. Of course it’s not quite that simple though! Balance your combo multiplier while exploding different colored fireworks with the appropriate button presses. Two players can battle head to head as the music gets faster every time you loop through the track ‚Ķ eek!

Renowned developer: Boom Boom Rocket was developed by Bizarre Creations, who brought Project Gotham Racing® 3 to Xbox 360™, and fan favorite Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved to Xbox LIVE® Arcade.

Music and rhythm: Trigger rockets to the beat of the music while traveling through a 3-D cityscape. The better you time the explosions, the more spectacular the fireworks effects.

Original soundtrack: The fireworks are choreographed to 10 original tracks created by composer Ian Livingstone.

Difficulty levels: The game features three modes of play, Normal, Speed, and Multiplayer head-to-head. Each song is choreographed into three skill levels to ensure that everyone can join in the fun.

Combos and bonuses: Successfully chain fireworks to fill the bonus meter and activate the psychedelic bonus mode for extra points. Unlock new firework designs by mastering each music track.

Unique offering: Boom Boom Rocket is the first music rhythm game available on Xbox LIVE Arcade

Endurance mode alone is worth the ten bucks (if you like rhythm games). In all seriousness, the songs are a completely different beast on each difficulty. I’m struggling through easy right now, I’ve got an “A” on one song, “C”s and “B”s on the rest (but maybe I just suck).

The songs are okay for the most part. I gaurantee you’ll recognize all the core music, but the remixes are all that Europop stuff, and its obvious that more time was spent on certain songs.

Lastly, the visuals are really, really good. After seeing some videos, I had my doubts, but its pretty impressive, especially during the Shadow Runs (think of Geomitry Wars when all hell is breaking loose).

If you’re not into rhythm games, don’t bother, but if you like them, its great fun.

Oh, yeah, I’d give it around a solid 8 of 10. If theres some decnt(ly priced) DLC, it’ll give it some legs.
