Kratos Doesn’t Just Move Mountains

God of War II LogoKratos doesn’t just move mountains, he also moves lots and lots of copies of his latest game. The March NPD numbers gave God of War II the number one spot in software sales with a whopping 833,000 units sold. Reuters ran the numbers, noticing that it sold more than twice as much as the number two game, G.R.A.W. 2 for the 360.

GRAW 2′s 394,000 units sold is nothing to sneeze at, especially for a sequel that’s supposed to be pretty much the same game as the original. Both games speak to how well they know their fan base, and like it or not reinforces the making of sequels.

Via Kotaku, who linked to Reuters. Joystiq has all of the NPD numbers.

This game is selling great. It’s a critical and financial success for sure. But one has to mention the install base of the machines when comparing these numbers. Even if the GoW2 sells 10 million copies, it will still only be hitting about 8 percent of the install base. On the other hand if GRAW2 sells 2 million copies, it will hit 20 percent of the install base.

That’s a good point. I’m not sure if GoW2 is out worldwide just yet, but when all is said and done I’m pretty sure it’ll outsell the first one.

I think it a telling statement about the staying power of the PS2. Here is a systems that is last generation, according to Sony, and yet has a game that is at the top of the sales chart.
