I Don’t Want My MTV

Rock_Band.JPGToday, Harmonix, MTV and EA announced the next iteration of the Guitar Hero franchise, Rock Band. While few exact details are availble about the game, the press release does give us a snippet of what to expect this holiday season;

“Rock Band will allow gamers to perform music from the world‚Äôs biggest rock artists with their friends as a virtual band using drum, bass/lead guitar and microphone peripherals, in addition to offering deep online connectivity. Built on unprecedented deals with the world‚Äôs biggest record labels and music publishers, the music featured in Rock Band will span all genres of rock and include many of the master recordings from the biggest songs and artists of all time. Rock Band is slated for release on PLAYSTATION¬Æ3 computer entertainment system and Xbox 360‚Ñ¢ video game and entertainment system from Microsoft¬Æ in holiday 2007.”

I’ve thought about the whole “virtual band,” idea ever since Guitar Hero was first released but the cost and necessity of the peripherals swayed me away from it. Obviously, the massive success of Guitar Hero has convinced Harmonix and EA to take the plunge. Will we be seeing “Rock Band Drums,” and “Rock Band Bass” versions of the game when it’s released, all for $89.99+ a piece with instrument?

A few things to note:

1) No mention of a Wii version. Sorry Nintendo fans but the system hardware and online scheme (or lack of a legitamate one) strikes again.

2) I can’t stand seeing MTV even mentioned in relation to video games. Is it just me or does everything they touch seem to turn to sh*t? Hopefully they play a very small part in this.

    I wouldn’t worry about the MTV association. It’s actually a good thing this time around because even though Guitar Hero is a behemoth of a license and Harmonix can do pretty much whatever they want; MTV can wrangle up a lot of musical contacts to get those exclusive, never before heard tracks.

    Don’t sweat the details, just sit back and wait for what will be one groundbreaking experience.

    Cool, and ambitious. I’m guessing with so many add-ons they’ll be selling the guitar with the software itself, then the software alone, followed by the add-on peripherals only.

    I’d be kind of surprised if they made a bass instead of just modifying how the guitar works in software for that person.

    I’ll be that the extra data jack on the Xbox 360 guitar hero 2 guitar will let it work with Rock Band.
