Guess Which God of War Level Wasn’t Play Tested?

Submitted by on April 22, 2007 – 1:33 pm5 Comments

Kratos With MedusaI finished God of War II last week and took some time to watch the entire set of material on the additional DVD of behind the scenes content that came with the game. Some of the videos discussed play testing and even showed footage of the play tests of God of War II and how critical it was to the game’s success.

On the God Of War II DVD one little tidbit came to light that I hadn’t seen or heard anywhere else. The Blades of Hades level in God of War was the ONLY level that was NOT play tested. “And you know how good THAT came out,” Cory Barlog, Director of God of War II, said in the clip about it.

Some time ago David Jaffe apologized for the extremely difficult and upsetting segment of God of War known as the Blades of Hades level. This level, in case you didn’t suffer through it like I did, involved Kratos having to climb up, climb down, or walk across various rotating poles sporting very sharp blades. These blades would knock him off of vertical poles, or send him flying off horizontal ones to start again or plummet to his death. It was enormously frustrating.

Incidentally, the DVD also showed how incredibly hard it is to make probably the very best single-player game of the last generation. I can only wonder how grueling and difficult it will be to make God of War III on the PS3.

    I’m sorry but people need to get over the blades of Hades. they were easy. i only fell off twice. compare to a mario game that is a fucking walk in the park.

    The complaints are made even stupider when you relaize that it is almost impossible to fall off anything while jumping in that game. Try it. Just mash the x button and you’ll get though in record time.

    GOW best game of the prior generation? I am dubious. Let’s nip that little meme in the bud right now, shall we?

    @Dave

    I’m sorry but you’re a moron. Congratulations on missing the entire point of the article. The point of the article was the most frustrating level was not play tested. Do you feel good after posting a comment saying how well you did on a video game level. do you think anyone cares? I would recommend thinking before posting a comment and working on your vocabulary(pointless swear word = weak vocab)

    @John h.

    “probably the very best single-player game of the last generation.”, keywords are probably and single-player.

    You’re a troll. Dave’s comment is a perfectly valid response to the article, aside from the fact that I happen to completely agree with him. People can get different things out of the same post, you know.

    @Mac.

    I bought the game a week ago. I’m not good at it. It took me like 20 tries to beat the fucking hydra.

    But for whatever reason, the devs made it so that Kratos has sticky jumps. you don’t need to worry about balance or position AT ALL when you jump, so if you mash X (mashing buttons not exactly alien to GOW players) you can get through any of the poles as long as your timing is decent.

    The ONLY bad part are the two vertical sections.
