Factor 5 hopes to bring back Turrican, Metroid Prime style.

Gamasutra has an interview up with Julian Eggebrecht, in which he says Factor 5 is “working on concepts” for a new Turrican game. He makes comparisons to Metroid Prime, clearly an incantation to whatever spirits took the great 2D Metroid franchise and somehow transformed it into something completely different without ruining it… and in fact making it even better in my opinion. Flame on..

Turrican was a side-scrolling shooter I played in my Sega Genesis days. Lots of fun. Never played any of the sequels though.

I’m excited to see what comes of this. Hopefully we’ll see something multiplatform. With Factor 5 working on Lair for PS3 and their bizarre devotion almost exclusively to Nintendo’s platforms for the last two generations, one wonders if they’ll sit their asses on the PS3 boat as it slowly capsizes too. They picked a bad time to abandon ship this generation, didn’t they… and a bad direction. Hello!

Interestingly though, the best part of the interview itself was hearing Eggebrecht talk about the music composition in the game and progressive mesh terrain generation. Very cool stuff.

I’ve played a bit of Turrican. It is worth revisiting, but I don’t know if it should be in first-person or third person. Also, I’m still on the fence in whether I like Super Metroid or Metroid Prime better. Ask me again in 10 years.
