Convince me to buy a PS3!

Submitted by on April 11, 2007 – 3:30 pm36 Comments

Angry-guy.jpgI have a problem that needs help from all of our readers. I cannot convince myself to buy a PS3. I just got paid for working on a really big project and I thought it was the right time to take the PS3 plunge. I went to a local Ebgames with full intent to pickup a PS3, but instead I ended up pacing around the store for more then an hour talking to the young man who worked there. After sizing up all the upsides and downsides I walked out the door empty handed and wondering what the hell was wrong with me? I am one console away from gaming trinity, yet I cannot see value in picking it up. I tried thinking about all the good games that will come out for it later, but that didn’t work. All the thoughts of lost exclusives and Sony PR explosions have left a bitter taste in my mouth.

So in turn I ask all of you to give me a reason to buy a PS3. I really wanted to buy one yesterday, but my mind just could not come up with a good argument for it. Leave your reason in our comments section.

Oh, and XAQ, you might be a little more considerate in your casual use of words.

  • Richard (Aeropause)

There are games that interest me on the PS3 but in all reality the 360 will have games similar to all the PS3 exclusives.

I think my problem lies in the fact that I am all about online and the PS3 is just weak there at the moment. Resistance was fun but Halo and other online games trumph it in so many ways. I think as soon as Sony has a killer online game I will spend the money (hopefully by the price will be lower.

I guess I will use the cash on a new HDTV!

But, but… You can use it as a dust collector! And a bloody good one at that.

You can always join me in my stance. I fully intend to buy a PS3… just as soon as it costs less than $300. If it’s 2012 before that happens, so be it. (Unless I win the lottery or something – then I might get it sooner.)

Yep, Not gonna buy one until these things happen (when it makes the most sense to buy one)

    1) Price drops below $299.
    2) Greatest hits start to hit ($20 is so much better than $60)
    3) A couple games come out that aren’t just “tech demos”. From what i’ve heard, most games are no better than the mini-game laiden wii. LIke motostorm.
    4) I dunno, it just seems silly to buy one anytime soon. Most games that people are saying to buy the system for don’t come out til this christmas, and probably (knowing MGS) not til next year… mid next year.

    @ foshi

Dude, don’t mention killzone. That’s as much a reason NOT to get the ps3 as anything.

    @ Richard

Honestly, if you can’t see yourself buying it even if money is no object then you really shouldn’t buy it. The fact that we have to convince you proves you don’t really want one.

For me, it is fairly simple. MGS4. Just as I knew I would buy 360 for Halo, and Wii for zelda, I will buy a ps3 for MGS4. But if that doesn’t do it for you i can’t really recommend anything.

Easy, Sony sucks. Their business practices are smack to their consumer’s face. Don’t buy their crap and support them.

Honestly Richard, I’d wait. I’m a PS3 and Wii Owner, and there aren’t many games out for the PS3 yet that I am interested in, and I ‘ve been playing mostly PS2 games on my PS3 system. The main reason I got it was to upgrade my system. It’s going to be a year or two until SONY can get up to speed.

Blu-ray is a nice perk. Video playback, photo album slideshows, and music playback are nice perks. The web browser isn’t worth much to me.

But if you can’t find a full retail game you want to play on it right now, I think that makes your decision for you.

I don’t foresee running out of things to play on my PS3. I have a stack of PS2 games I still want to play (even after God of War II), I’m having a great time with Resistance Fall of Man, and really want to play more of it online as time permits. I also have Oblivion waiting to be played. I played a rental of NBA Street Homecourt the other night and it was really great fun. Is it out for the 360? I’m sure it is, but I don’t have a 360.

If you already have a next-gen system I’d avoid getting a second one simply because one of the systems will starve for attention and you’ll end up feeling bad. I made that mistake when got a Gamecube a couple of years ago and ended up doing nothing but playing PlayStation 2 all the time. Even Zelda wasn’t enough to hold my attention given everything great that was hitting the PS2. This is especially true if you also have a handheld system like a PSP or DS to take up your time.

I frankly am not that tempted to look at a Wii to go with my PS3 and PSP. I just don’t think there’s enough time to have that many systems to play.

I’ll be honest with you. Two months ago, I would have said, “Screw Sony”.
I own an Xbox 360, and while I love IT, I don’t care very much for Microsoft anymore. Say what you want about Sony and their arrogance and greed, but MS is no different.
The whole thing about MS wanting Epic to charge for DLC, and a comment about wanting gamers to “get used to paying for downloadables”, etc.

Then, what they are doing with XBL Arcade, sucks.
They invented the arcade concept, and now it looks like Sony and Nintendo are going to completely destroy them.
Both Nintendo and Sony have a better back-catalog of games, and what does MS give us? Root Beer Tapper? Paperboy? I want more games like Alien Hominid, Castle Crashers, and Assault Heroes.
And if you’re going to go retro, there are plenty of good, deep games we could get.

Then, the Elite model. And $179 bones for the stand-alone HDD. SCREW YOU MICROSOFT!!!
What’s next? In 1 1/2 years they will probably release a 4th sku with HD-DVD or Blu-Ray and ask us early adopters to buy that with NO incentive.

    3 words: Free Online Play.

i hate the fact you have to pay for a subscription when you already pay for an internet connection.
