Civilization IV to Pay Homage to X-COM

Back in early 1993, there was a great little game called X-COM. It was a turn based strategy game that had legions of fans that would play the game for hours at a time, trying to keep their teams from getting destroyed by some Ethereals or Sectoids. Well, the next Civilization update is going to have a scenario called Afterworld. Tim McCracken, of Fireaxis, said that the scenario will not play out like a normal Civilization game. Not much else was said, with the exception that the scenario would be a homage to the X-COM series of games.

Not that this has to be said, but lets hope that they only take from the first two X-COM games, because any X-COM after the second one is not really an X-COM game in the eyes of most die-hard fans of the series.

woah woah woah woah. why the hate? while x-com 2 terror from the deep was a pallet swaped x-com 1, apocalypse was pretty dang fun. the real time addition, the factions that could be fought, and the dynamic Mega-Primus city was a good game. im not going to go and defend some of the more recent titles (though ive also never played them), but apocalypse’s only failure was that the bar was set very, very high.

While X-COM Apocalypse was good, it tried to cater to old veterans of the series as well as newcomers. This presented a problem as it did neither the turn based nor the real time modes well.

I thought there was potential X-COM: Alliance, but it was cancelled shortly after Infogrames bought out Microprose. It is sad to see such a great license not used. I think now is a perfect time to bring it back to the forefront. Hell, I would may major points to get X-COM on XBLA with multiplayer.
