Capcom’s Digital Initiative for XBLA, PSN, PC, not Wii
Capcom has announced a new “Digital Initiative” consisting of four titles that will be digitally distributed downloads not just for the given Xbox Live Arcade, but the PlayStation Network and — surprise — the PC. Two of the titles were announced as Capcom arcade machine ports of Super Street Fighter II and Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo, and the other two will be non-Capcom properties.
Actually there’s one other surprise. No Wii downloadable/Virtual Console versions are part of this Digital Initiative. This tells me one of two things. Either Capcom is still in the dark about the ability for non-Nintendo titles to be digitally published to the system, or Capcom doesn’t understand that money is green and more of it is good.
Given their exclusivity dealings with Microsoft, we can assume the latter isn’t true. So I’m going to land on the side of the former, ratifying the industrywide confusion as to just how others can get in on the downloadable content market for the hottest-selling console around. If they can, anyway.
That said, the Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix will have online play, voice chat, worldwide rankings, and all new 1080p-supporting graphics atop the original code base, which should make for an interesting show. Seen the videos of Mortal Kombat II on the PSN yet? The graphics haven’t aged particularly well.
The first title to arrive will be Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo HD Remix, also redone with HD graphics and worldwide rankings. This game will also allow users to play with the original graphics if desired and will include new gameplay modes and a rebalancing of the original game.
