Bungie Says What the Mysterious X Button Will Do

For the past few weeks, Bungie has been coy about saying what the X button will do in Halo 3. All they would say is that the button would do something cool.

Well today, Bungie has let the cat out of the bag and has told the world what the button does. Is seems that the button will allow for players to drop mines or use bubble shields that are found on the battlefield. These items will be rare to find according to developers at Bungie, but when they are found will be a great surprise to spring on the enemy.

Maybe it is just me, but this does not seem like the big news it was made out to be. I am not a huge Halo player, so maybe someone can explain to me how this is big news. I think it might make multiplayer a little more interesting due to people not knowing if someone has one of these cool little toys up their sleeves, but I just don’t think it lives up to the hype.

Bungie did not say the X button deploys trip mines and bubble shields. They said that it deploys “equipment” or a new category of tools that is a combination between a grenade and a power up in a way. Trip mines and bubble shields he admitted were the lamest of all the equipment types. They also showed a deployable grav lift as an equipment type, which is interesting because it changes the way a map works, very similar to a portable ladder or staircase.

There will also be other deployables which will probably be even cooler. Hopefully stuff like portable turrets from the beginning of Halo 2 will be on that list. It’s a small sliver of the overall idea that they’ve shown us so far. I think it will be a very interesting addition to Halo multiplayer. With the tweaks and caveats they have on dropped equipment I think it will add an additional layer to the game while “keeping it halo.”

I just hope the bubble shield doesnt let people in it and that sword noobs will just hit it and get owned. They should have made the X button kill the sword noob instanly and have him kicked off of Xbox Live forever.
