20 GB PS3 Officially Dead

Submitted by on April 11, 2007 – 6:09 pm4 Comments

ps3-20gb.jpgWhat has been rumored for weeks has finally been confirmed. Sony will be discontinuing production of 20 GB PS3′s as of today. The official statement reads as follows:

“At launch, we offered two separate models of PLAYSTATION 3 to meet the diverse needs and interests of our PlayStation fan base. Initial retail demand in North America was upwards of ninety percent in favor of the 60GB SKU, so we manufactured and shipped-in accordingly. Due to the overwhelming demand for the 60GB model from both retailers and consumers, we have ceased offering the 20GB model here in North America. In addition to the larger internal hard drive, the 60GB PlayStation 3 features added storage media slots and built-in Wi-Fi not found in the 20GB system. Based on retailer and consumer feedback, we have decided to focus our current efforts on the more popular 60GB model.”

Sony also states that there are still some 20 GB models on store shelves and that they will still offer full support for anyone who wishes to purchase those systems. The 360 and PS3 both tried dual SKU’s and both have seen limited success. I just hope that both companies have leaned from their mistakes and don’t ever try dual SKU’s ever again.

i wonder if the will discontinue the core system for the 360 would that even make sense

Not sure they would drop the core system. Microsoft’s trying to kind of flood Sony out of the multifunction machine market. If they’re taking a loss on selling the core system, I think they’d keep taking it just to have something more on the shelf people could buy instead of a PS3.

Sony, on the other hand, is trying to tighten up their offering to control losses.

People are still buying the Core system, though. I know someone at work who got one as a gift and hasn’t even bought the hard drive for it yet, subsisting on whatever he can do with a memory card.
